Dear Hamilton City School District Parents, Guardians, and Students,
Thank you for your understanding during the first several weeks of school as we started gathering data related to vaccinations, quarantines, and student attendance.
Based on the advice of medical professionals and the data we have assembled, the rate of positive COVID cases with our students is increasing daily. This past week, the district attendance rate for students was less than 80%.
Additionally, due to the rate of positive cases, more students are currently quarantined or have tested positive than at any point during the 2020-21 school year.
This data is alarming due to safety concerns for students and staff and that more students are missing class and instruction than ever before.
HCSD Board of Education and the district is committed to providing students a 5-day in-person educational experience. We want our students to stay in school - in person. We believe that attendance will improve by adding a layer of protection (face covering), even for vaccinated individuals.
As a public school district, please understand we must follow the quarantine protocols set up by our local health department in the City of Hamilton. With minimal exceptions, students in our preschools and elementary buildings are not eligible to receive the vaccination yet. Vaccination rates throughout the country are on the rise among teens; however, a significant number are still unvaccinated, and requiring face coverings is the best method to protect all students and staff members.
The district has taken an additional step and arranged a vaccination clinic for district-eligible students and employees on Tuesday, September 7, 2021, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Garfield Middle School. More information about the clinic is included at the bottom of this letter.
Starting on Wednesday, September 8th, 2021, all HCSD students and employees will be required to wear face coverings indoors, regardless of vaccination status. This mandate includes the already existing federal criteria of face coverings on school buses. This requirement will be reevaluated at the end of the first quarter on October 12, 2021.
We will closely monitor the number of positive cases in our schools and community and will adjust policies and protocols, including face coverings, as needed.
We want our students and staff safe in school and to limit the spread of COVID. In order to achieve this, we need to mask up!
